I'm a bit annoyed at myself that I'm not doing NaNoWriMo this year. I had fun last year, even if I didn't get anywhere near the 50'000 word count. I even still like the story I started, imagine that!
But I never seem to have any time. And this month it feels like everything has been leading up to the costume ball this weekend. It feels like something really dramatic or somehow life-changing is going to happen tomorrow night, which is silly. Possibly my best friend will stab me because the guy she has a crush on is more interested in me. The way she glared at me last friday when he asked me to dance was a sure sign of impending doom. :/

We watched ghost movies not even I was scared of and a zombie movie that was so boring that we turned it off half way through. It was fun :)

Next weekend, Sarah's brother's 19th birthday party (theme: the eighties. I need to get some horrible 80s-style clothing), and weekend after that, Sarah and her boyfriend are inviting some friends around for dinner. Man I am just booked out these days.

Obviously he's not at all interested in me. How I ever let myself imagine that he was, I don't know.

I will stop pining after him now, it's just too tiring.

I was going on about German authors to a co-worker just before (how much I love Heinrich Heine, what a weirdo E.T.A. Hoffmann was etc. etc.) when I remembered that I wrote about German authors in ilovedragons a few years ago. So I went back to look at what I wrote.

Aaaaaaargh! Die, Crazy Literature Teacher, DIE!

I mean, what kind of customer will come in and say "Excuse me, could you tell me what The Sorrows of young Werther is all about?"
Damn you, well known authors of the 20th century, for writing books that are worth remembering today. Why couldn't you have written less ground-shaking stuff?

I'd be much happier if we had to learn well known ENGLISH authors off by heart (what they wrote, when they wrote). Austen, Byron, Chaucer, where are you? Who the hell are Dürrenmatt, Hoffmann and Schiller? :(

Lucky for me I'm at home with a massive headache, so I have more time to study. Yay?

Well, I still don't think much of Dürrenmatt and Schiller, but Hoffmann! He was a loon, I love him.

I've changed my opinion of German classics so much that I'm actually considering studying German and English literature in Uni.

Which makes me happy :) I've come a long way in the last two years.

Also, now I know what The Sorrows of young Werther is all about. Its WOE is epic and Goethe (the author) should have considered all the poor school children who'd have to read it hundreds of years later. He should have made it shorter. Instead of Werther going: "Oh, Lotte! I can never have you!" and then writing letters about it for the next hundred pages before finally shooting himself, it should be: "Oh, Lotte! I can never have you! Alfred, lend me your pistol, will you?"

I'm going to the Frankfurt Book Fair in october. Three days of books and nothing but books! In Germany!

I can finally get out of Switzerland again. :/ I was going to see the Boosh! But as it turns out I can't because I have school then. And my whole family wanted to go to Scotland this year but we can't do that either because we can't all get holidays at the same time.

I might go to England alone, though. If I ever have time or money. Which I probably won't this year. But one day I want to go to London and decide where to go once I'm there, not book hotels and all in advance. Adventurous!
I'd love to see the english countryside, the closest I've ever gotten to it is Countryfile. :(

I was at Sarah's place yesterday, reading on the lounge because she'd disappeared off somewhere, when her brother came in and started playing this amazing tune on the piano. I had to put my book down and just listen because it was so moving and beautiful and UGH WANT.

I asked him what tune it was and he said "oh, it's the second movement of my piano sonata that I actually can't play yet."

The guy is 18.

Then he played some variations of a Swiss folk song that is kind of boring but he changed it into a minor key and made it all dramatic and it sounded great.

And he thinks he can't really play the piano because he can't sight read. Nooo, being able to make tunes up as you go along isn't real talent. [/sarcasm]

Maybe it's time I stopped being jealous of people who can play the piano and actually started learning it myself.

(Actually I almost asked him if he'd give me lessons but... I kind of fancy him so that wouldn't be good.)

***

In other news, I have new furniture of which I shall post plenty of pictures later. Also, I got Lucy Knisley's book Radiator Days and there's a very cute story in there about a girl who works in a bookshop and secretly gives away books. It made me remember how much I actually love my job. I do want to work somewhere else when I finish my apprenticeship, but I definitely still want to work in a bookshop.
